OPEN CALL

GOOD TROUBLE / U DECIDE EXHIBITION

America’s artists honor the legacy of John Lewis

On November 3rd, Americans will be asked to vote in what may be the most consequential election of the century. The choices are clear. It’s the opportunity We the People have to decide the future direction of our country at this difficult time in its history. Reminding voters when and why they should vote is vitally important. Which is why Washington’s CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL ART and Washington’s MILLENNIUM ARTS SALON, both 501-(c)-(3) nonprofits, are issuing this Open Call for Art to illustrate Get-Out-the-Vote posters to be shown in a juried exhibition in Washington , circulated on Social Media, and possibly displayed on billboards in cities across the country.

RULES OF ENTRY

  1. We have created 10 templates, each expressing a different issue or reason which we think should motivate the electorate to vote this November.
  2. You are being asked to create art that best illustrates the message the words convey.
  1. ALL OF THE WORDS ON EACH TEMPLATE MUST APPEAR ON YOUR SUBMISSION AND NO OTHER WORDS MAY BE ADDED. You may, however, use different fonts and re- arrange the words as you see fit.
  2. The original art for the posters may be of any medium but it must be photographed and placed on the template so that your submission (jpeg) is a complete poster.
  3. Each artist may submit one or two posters for each of the templates, which means each artist may submit only one poster or as many as 16.
  4. FORMAT: jpeg with artists name, city of residence and email address + a short artists statement explaining why he or she chose the template they did and why they think it’s important for Americans to vote (without reference to which candidate the artist thinks they should vote for).
  5. A jury of experts (tba) will decide which submissions will be included in the exhibit.
  6. Artists who submit work for the jury’s consideration agree that the presenting insti-tutions may use it to advertise the exhibit in print or online; on billboards; and for social media get-out-the-vote campaigns and/ or to call attention to the exhibit.
  7. We will print the winning entries for display in Washington.
  8. DEADLINE: Saturday, October 3, 2020
  9. OPENING: Friday, October 9 through Election Day, November 3rd.
  10. HOW TO SUBMIT: Jpegs of each poster must be sent inside emails with the artist’s name, city of residence and artist’s statement to GOODTROUBLE@politicsartus.org

TEMPLATES are not in order of preference. The jury will be asked to select up to four winning submissions for each template. Each submission must contain all the words indicated for each template and NO OTHER WORDS. The font and size of the lettering is for the artist to decide.
