THERE'S MUCH ABOUT The GOOD, the BAD & the UGLY! Portraits of Our (Unindicted) Leader THAT'S UNUSUAL, INCLUDING THE STORY OF HOW AND WHY JULIAN RAVEN'S FLATTERING  PORTRAIT OF DONALD TRUMP IS NOW ON VIEW AT THE CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY POLITICAL ART, NOT THE SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, WHICH TURNED IT DOWN ON THE GROUNDS IT WAS "TOO TRUMP" AND "TOO POLITICAL."

RAVEN'S STORY, AND THE STORY OF HIS LAWSUIT TO TRY TO FORCE THE PORTRAIT GALLERY TO EXHIBIT HIS PAINTING, IS TOLD IN THE AUGUST ISSUE OF WASHINGTONIAN MAGAZINE.

TITLED The Artist, The Museum and The President, THE WASHINGTONIAN PIECE FOCUSES ALMOST ENTIRELY ON RAVEN'S LEGAL BATTLE WITH THE PORTRAIT GALLERY; HIS DECISION TO EXHIBIT HIS PAINTING ALONGSIDE PORTRAITS OF TRUMP BY TWO ARTISTS, TIM ATSEFF and JIM BODEN, WHO PORTRAY THE PRESIDENT IN A VERY DIFFERENT, NEGATIVE LIGHT, ISN'T EVEN MENTIONED.

YET, IT'S CERTAINLY UNUSUAL. AND MAY BE MORE IMPORTANT. BECAUSE, AS FAR AS WE KNOW, OUR CURRENT EXHIBIT IS THE FIRST TO SHOW PRO AND ANTi-TRUMP ART TOGETHER AT THE SAME TIME AND PLACE. AND THAT'S BECAUSE OF HIS PUBLICLY-STATED HOPE THAT THE CCPArt EXHIBIT WOULD INITIATE "A DIALOGUE THAT'S LONG OVERDUE" BETWEEN TRUMP SUPPORTERS AND OPPONENTS.

ALL THREE ARTISTS HOPE THAT SHOWING THEIR WORK TOGETHER WILL SET AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHERS, AND HELP REDUCE THE DANGEROUS POLARIZATION TRUMP'S ELECTION AND POLICIES HAVE CAUSED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

WHETHER OR NOT THAT HOPE IS REALIZED, THE ART WORK IN The GOOD, the BAD & the UGLY! EXHIBIT IS FIRST-RATE AND WORTH SEEING. RAVEN'S PORTRAIT REPRESENTS THE "GOOD" TRUMP; BODEN'S THE "BAD" TRUMP; AND ATSEFF'S THE "UGLY" TRUMP. THE ONLINE CATALOGUE FOR THE EXHIBIT IS HERE.
